ONIRA takes up the special cabinet shape introduced on ARMONIA. The project is more ambitious, the resources deployed more substantial. The cabinet structure of multiply high density MDF is increased to 25mm for the four sides, and 47mm for the top and bottom.
This laminar structure is formed around a framework of six heavy bracing panels. To optimize the flow of structure‐borne noise, the ONIRA cabinet stands on a central cone positioned on the axis of the center of gravity. The four side spikes are for stability only.
The ONIRA uses two 17cm bass/mid‐range drivers, identical to those used on ARMONIA. This drive‐unit has a powerful magnetic circuit of 11cm in diameter, totally decompressed. The “Isotactic matrix ” cone combines stiffness and damping, to allow playback of a wide bandwidth without any break‐up mode and with low distortion. A copper ring on the pole piece reduces distortion. An extensive study of the internal load architecture brings the benefit of a truly harmonised operation of the two mid‐woofers. This is very often not the case.
The ONIRA high frequency drive‐unit, like that of the Armonia, is from a new generation of ribbon tweeters using an aluminum / polymer sandwich diaphragm. This tweeter has an emitting surface twice that of the Armonia, so far greater than all dome tweeters on the market, for a mass ten times lower. This feature allows us to choose a lower crossover frequency and to take advantage of the finesse, precision and attack of a ribbon tweeter over a wider frequency range.
No great system can exist without a filter worthy of the name, and that of the Onira is no exception and contributes to the exceptional sound quality of this loudspeaker. The filter, developed by Christian Yvon, uses a “DRIM” architecture. It allows him to shape the frequency response of each drive unit, and thus optimize the crossover transition zone and minimize intermodulation. Three different slopes of successively 6dB, 12dB and 24dB per octave at the transition give the benefit of the highest possible linearity combined with respect of time alignment.
Musically speaking, ONIRA displays all the common elements of Apertura loudspeakers: accurate timbres, precision, an incredibly wide dynamic range, and a total stability whether listening to a large orchestral tutti or the most subtle solo passages. The performers’ physical presence is outstanding. ONIRA gives precedence to the music and makes you rediscover your favorite tracks.
